Ford: 50% of vehicles electrified in 2022

Ford hopes that electrified vehicles will account for half of its sales in three years. But this includes all forms of electrification, including light hybrids!

An electrifying Frankfurt Fair. No press conference speech was made without the words “hybrid” or “electric”! Beautiful words and sacred promises. Several brands have thus formulated fine sales targets.

For example, Ford is targeting 50% of electrified vehicles in Europe by 2022. This seems very ambitious, because in Europe, the share of sales of “green” cars is close to zero, only the Mondeo being offered as a hybrid. We must therefore expect a big boost!

The brand’s hybrid and electric offer will indeed grow rapidly. You can see it in the living room. The new Kuga, which is taking its first European walkabout in Frankfurt, will thus be offered in simple hybrid and plug-in hybrid. Other novelties exhibited at the Frankfurt Motor Show in plug-in hybrid: the large Explorer SUV and the Transit Custom. In 2020, the brand will present its 100% electric sports SUV.

But the builder with the blue oval plays with words a bit. Because in its calculation, it includes light hybrids! These models are satisfied with an alternator-starter and a 48V battery. This is recharged during the deceleration and braking phases, and then provides electrical assistance during acceleration. The system does not therefore advance the car alone, it allows consumption to drop slightly.

And the light hybrid will be very common in the Ford range. The Puma will be equipped with petrol blocks of 125 and 155 hp, then we will find it on the Fiesta, Focus, Kuga. On the utility side, Transit Custom and Transit 2T will also be affected. In the 50% of vehicles electrified in 2022, a very large part will therefore be light hybridization!
