The e-convertibles are coming: four exciting models

Sedans, small cars, vans and above all SUVs – the electric drive has actually spread to every type of car. Only emission-free roadsters and cabriolets are, apart from the folding roof variants of Smart and Fiat, absolute exceptions. That could change in the future and thus bring e-mobility out of its ecological niche and into the hearts of many previously skeptical drivers more than before. Four exciting perspectives.

Toyota MR2

Toyota MR2

Toyota has long avoided electric cars. But the Japanese have now recognized the signs of the times and will be unveiling a cornucopia of electrical concepts at the end of 2021. Among them was a crisply proportioned two-seater, which has since been traded as a potential successor to the MR2. Toyota has not yet given any information on the model name, the technology or a possible market launch. It is a strikingly progressive sports car with a fluid skin, dramatic bulges and a flat nose. In the front, there are also large side air vents that are framed by distinctive LED light strips. Also noteworthy: front and side windows form a unit, door handles are not visible. “To build! Definitely.”, most roadster fans will probably think. In any case, the Japanese will not have unveiled the roadster just for fun.

Wiesmann Thunderball

Wiesmann Thunderball

In April 2022, Wiesmann, a revived brand, reported back with the electric roadster Thunderball. The two-seater picks up on the retro styling typical of Wiesmann, but dispenses with the BMW V8 that has been standard up to now. Instead, an 800-volt electric drive with 500 kW/680 hp is planned, with which the 1.7-ton vehicle should reach 100 km/h in under three seconds. A 92 kWh battery should allow a range of 500 kilometers. A market launch date has not yet been mentioned, but a price of 300,000 euros.

MG Cyberster

MG Cyberster

Exactly when the revived MG brand will launch its first electric roadster called the Cyberster also remains an intriguing question. 2024 say rumors. The two-seater was presented in April 2021 as a concept worth seeing, which should sprint to 100 km/h in under three seconds and have a range of 800 kilometers. Series production was decided shortly after the presentation. The Chinese seem to be serious about getting started soon. In the meantime, patent drawings of a chic, but less spectacular than the study drawn fabric roof speedster are circulating.

Fisker Ronin

Fisker Ronin

Also in 2024, the e-car brand Fisker, which has also been reactivated, wants to bring a four-seater convertible onto the market. A first picture of the topless Stromer has already been published under the project name Ronin. Like the previously mentioned e-convertibles, the fresh-air Fisker should allow a potent drive from three motors, a sprint time to 100 km/h in around two seconds and a huge battery with a range of almost 1000 kilometers. There’s even a price tag of $200,000 already.
